I look for opportunities to serve.
I
make a point of developing my spiritual life—I read and study, I pray
and meditate, I am part of a spiritual community. But spiritual
understanding doesn’t count for much unless I put it into action. So I
look for ways to serve. Any act of kindness is a form of service. It might be volunteering to
help the poor, but it also could be mowing a neighbor’s lawn, letting
someone ahead in the grocery line, or carpooling with children. Service
ranges from full-time caregiving to something as simple as listening.
Anything I do to make life a little easier for another is service, and I
see opportunities to serve as soon as I look for them. Service is a
spiritual practice.
Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received.—1 Peter 4:10
